They referred to their activities in four Middle Eastern countries of Iraq, Libya, Yemen, and Palestine, and mentioned that the main challenges facing their Middle East activities are the weakness of civil society, the diversity of interests of regional and non-regional actors, and the absence of regional organizations and institutions. Iranian participants (including Dr. Sheikholeslami and Dr. Haji Mine) also highlighted the importance of understanding the situation in the Middle East and referred to influential factors, including: failed states, religiously and ethnically divided communities, as well as the role of transnational actors.
