In the latest session of the "Book and Diplomacy" series, organized by the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the 36th Tehran International Book Fair, the book "Futures Studies of the Foreign Policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the International and Neighborhood Environments" was unveiled on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the booth of the Ministry's publishing department.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Dr. Jalal Dehghani Firouzabadi, one of the authors of the book, addressed the importance of a precise understanding of the psychological and operational environments in foreign policy, as well as the consequences arising from an incorrect perception of the international environment. He described this work as the outcome of a comprehensive research project dedicated to futures studies and the examination of key drivers of Iran's foreign policy, particularly within its neighboring environment. Dr. Firouzabadi further elaborated on the research process, which included the study of political, economic, and environmental drivers, the extraction of trends, political events, and megatrends, and ultimately, futures studies based on these drivers and various scenarios.
He also referred to the analysis of different types of international systems and security environments discussed in the book, describing the current international system as an "asymmetric bipolarity" between the United States of America and China, with the potential to transform into a "multi-pluralistic" system in the future (around the year 2030).
Subsequently, Dr. Seyed Reza Mousavi-nia, another author of the work, emphasized the necessity of considering variable and dynamic scenarios in futures studies. He defined futures studies not as a means of definitive prediction of the future, but as a process for "shaping the future" through the intelligent analysis of trends and events.
At the conclusion of the session, the aforementioned book was unveiled in the presence of officials and the authors.
