The joint virtual meeting between the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences of China, about the regional, international and bilateral issues, was held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.

The meeting was attended by Mr.Mohammadhassan Sheikholeslami, President of IPIS; Mr.Majid Ghafelehbashi, Research Deputy for IPIS; Seyedmohsen Marandi, Professor of the university of Tehran; Khalil Shirgholami and Mohsen Bagheri, Senior Experts of China; and Dr.Barzegar, Academic Advisor of the Center; Mr.Wang Jian, President of the Chinese institute; Yu Jianhua, Zhao Jianming, Wang Shuming and Sun Xia, Senior Researchers of the said institute.

The meeting was held in the form of two panels, “Bilateral Relations and the Iranian-Chinese Look to the International Developments” and  “Regional and International Issues. “During the meeting the participants  exchanged their opinions.

Here are the major topics touched upon at the meeting:

  • Iran and China, as two Asian civilizations, enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges. Since the start of bilateral relations in august 1971, mutual political trust and cooperation have deepened between the two countries. Over the last 50 years, both sides have supported each other’s interests and concerns, a matter which has strengthened the mutual trust.
  • The main reason for the JCPOA situation is the US unilateral and illegal withdrawal from the JCPOA. The outcome of any negotiation with the west must be lifting of the sanctions and recognition of Iran’s nuclear rights as a member of the NPT. The Iranian nuclear dossier should not be a tool for pressuring Iran. China has a propelling role in the nuclear talks to achieve results.
  • The basis for forming and signing the 25 Year Cooperation Document between Iran and China is mutual need to each other. Look to the East has a high position in the long term Iranian foreign policy and China has especially counted on Iran for securing stable energy supply and presence in the Middle East and attracting the Region’s market.
