The commemorating ceremony of the 76th anniversary of foundation of the United Nations was held by the attendance of Dr.Mohammadhasssan Sheikholeslami, Foreign Minister’s Deputy and President of IPIS and Stefan Priesner, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for I.R.Iran and a group of ambassadors from various countries, at the IPIS building on Wednesday, December 1, 2021.

During his speech at the meeting, Dr.Mohammadhasssan Sheikholeslami stressed the need for strengthening multilaterism in the international relations and the duties of the international community for countering unilaterism of the countries. He added: the unilateral, illegal and illegitimate sanctions of the US against Iran are the clear example of economic terrorism and the assassination of Brigadier General, Ghasem Soleimani, by direct order of the US president is the example of state-sponsored terrorism.

President of IPIS described the changes in the UN structure, especially the makeup of the UNSC as an undeniable urgency and added that:  the present makeup of the UNSC is not according to the realities of the present world. The Islamic Republic of Iran supports a balanced reform of the UNSC to reflect the new realities of the world.

Also, Dr.Mohammadhasssan Sheikholeslami pointed to the Afghanistan situation and emergence of threats such as terrorism, poverty, starvation and migration from this country, and described the threat first directed at the Afghanistan neighbors , and second, at the whole region and world and emphasized that the UN and the international community had to fulfill their share of commitments for solving these crises.

Then, Mr.Priesner, in his speech, hinted at the old UN-Iran relations, which started since the foundation of the UN, and stressed the need for strengthening and continuing the trend .The United Nations Resident Coordinator for I.R.Iran thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for hosting millions of Afghan refugees, and asked the international community to meet their duty in helping Iran to manage this crisis.

Later at the meeting, the video message of Antonio Gutiérres , the Secretary-General of the United Nations, was displayed and at the final part the “ Iran and UN Cooperation History” book was débuted.
